How to plant lemon seeds
Step1. Prepare your potting soil
In order to plant a lemon you will need soil so pour some soil in a large bucket and add water until it is damp. Do not allow the soil to become soggy or else your seed will rot!! You will need a well-draining soil. Lemon trees love water!! But they hate to sit in it.
1. Try to get pasteurized soil mix because pasteurization gets rid of any kind of bacteria that can kill your seeds.
2. Consider getting a soil that is a blend of wheat, perlite, vermiculite and organic fertiliser. This will give your seedling proper drainage and nutrients.
Step 2. Choose a pot with drainage holes.
The pot should be about 3 to 4 inches (7.62 to 10.16 centimetres) wide, and 5 to 6 inches (12.7 to 15.24 centimetres) deep . This pot will be enough for one seed. Some people like to plant several seeds in one pot at a time. If you want to do this too, choose a larger pot.
1. Your pot must have holes. If your pot does not have any, you will need to drill some.
2. fill the pot with soil. Stop when the top of the soil is about 1 inch from the rim
3. Make a half inch deep hole in the soil. You can do this using your finger or a pencil.
Step 3.Choose a plump-looking seed from a lemon.
Choose organic lemon because seeds from non-organic lemon may not sprout.
Consider planting 5 to 10 lemon seeds at 1 time. Reason of sowing 10 seeds because some of the seeds do not sprout.
Step 4.Wash the seeds to get rid of the slimy coating.
This is important because the slimy coating contains sugars, which can cause the seed to rot.
1. Consider leaving the lemon seeds in a cup of warm water overnight. This will help them sprout faster.
Step 5. Drop the seed into the hole and cover it up
Make sure that the sharp tip is pointing downside into the soil, and the rounded part is towards up in the soil the roots will come out of the pointed part.
Step 6. Cover the pot with a piece of breathable plastic to trap warmth and moisture.
Wrap a rubber band around the plastic wrap to secure it to the pot. Make a few holes on the plastic wrap you can use a pencil or a fork. Theses holes will allow the plant to breathe.
Step 7. Place the pot in a warm location
You can see the sprout emerge in about two weeks. The ideal temperature is between 68 degrees F and 82.4 degrees F
Step 8. Water the soil when you see it become dry gently.
The plastic wrap should trap the moisture and the condensation should rain down on the soil. If you see the soil start to become dry remove the wrap and water the plant. Be sure to recover the pot with the plastic wrap when you are done watering.
Step 9. Remove the plastic cover once the sprouts appear and transfer the pot to a warm sunny location.
Remember to keep the soil damp but don’t let it soggy.
